Feel the Grain

Thursday, April 26, 2012

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.  High school sports under stadium lights are tough to shoot, and late into the evening yesterday was no exception.  To the naked eye, one might look and say "Wow - it looks bright enough to me".  Well, the meter doesn't lie.  340mm lens, ASA 4000, f/3.3 and 1/500 was pushing it to get enough exposure.  And these older boys move fast.  If I had my choice I wouldn't even shoot slower than 1/1250.

Good thing I like grain.  I'm not saying I choose it, but I won't let it get in my way.  Additionally, these photos allow me the freedom to convert to monochrome, which I think really work sometimes.  Otherwise the 1/60 second color shifts in stadium lighting is a whole different story...  Forget about pixel peeping, and shoot for climactic moments.  It is at least a good place to start.

"Allie's Hands"
Pigment Inkjet Print on Canson Platine Paper
4x5 original shot on Tri-x and processed in Diafine

One of several pieces I plan to offer to the PCA for their shop.  It has been a long time coming, and I have owed them something for several months.

More than "acceptable" accidents

Tuesday, April 24, 2012

More from that previous post where there was a contaminant that affected the emulsion of the film.  This time, couldn't have asked for it to be any more well placed.

So as to be clear, I really feel like there is a difference between laziness/inadequacy/and inexperience, and 'art'.  I have personal standards that do make me beyond frustrated that things like this sometimes happen, but beyond that I feel comfortable moving past that and presenting it as is.  Cloning, moving, eliminating, etc are just not really things that would improve this piece at all.

Beautiful Mistakes

Monday, April 23, 2012

I'd like to say that this was planned - part of the process - the beauty of the manner in which the photograph was made.  But that wouldn't be true. Honestly I don't know why this occurred - I loaded three "taco" sheets into the tank several days ago because I only have a certain amount of film holders, and I wanted to take some on a job.  So this sheet, along with two others, sat in the tank for a couple of days until I could get around to processing it.  The tank was dry, dark, and untouched.  I have to assume that it was some irregularity in the developer (Diafine), but that is a pretty defined shape to be of the nature of irregular inversions.  If someone has an obvious answer that please chime in...

But that is really beside the point.  I like this photograph.  It carries a memory for me - I remember what it felt like, what it smelled like, and what it sounded like when I made that photograph.  I remember what the stream sounded like while it moved effortlessly through that low field.  And that is what matters.  That is the point. There was a time when I would have looked at this when I first processed it and said "Ugh - garbage.  Can't believe it."  Not anymore...

I will go back and shoot this stream again, as it deserves that.  But only because every time I return it fills me with a sense of excitement and anticipation.

Recent Work

Hello all,

Haven't had much time to work on this and let you know what's going on lately - been very busy with portraits, scanning, processing, etc.  Here is a glimpse of what I have been up to:

'snapshots'...

Tuesday, April 3, 2012

This is about as close as you can come to snapshots with a 25 pound camera on a tripod using ground glass to focus and instant film.

Scanned, cropped, and a few dust flecks removed.  The color depth in the Fujjifilm fp-100c45 is very good.  Soft evening light yields the best results.

4x5 Portraits

Monday, April 2, 2012

I wasn't sure what to expect from this weekend's endeavors with the 4x5 - mainly experimenting with finding a sweet spot with Tri-X 320 Pan and Diafine.  Most of the previous frames were decidedly low in contrast, and lacks a DMax that scanned well.  The following were shot at EI 1000, and processed 4+4 in Diafine, Kodak fix and a long bath in a tray.  The processing is done in a daylight tank with the sheets  'taco' wrapped.

No alterations in PS except setting black point and taking a few dust bunnies off.  Overall, I am happy. I have one more holder to unload and process - I'll be sure to share those when I get around to it.

Onward!
